Microsoft has just unveiled support for Model Context Protocol (MCP) in Copilot Studio, making it easier than ever to integrate AI agents with external data sources and tools. You can read the announcement here

If you’ve ever struggled with keeping your AI-powered assistants connected to real-time business data, APIs, or knowledge bases, MCP is here to solve that. With just a few clicks, AI agents in Copilot Studio can now seamlessly pull in external knowledge, reducing development time and maintenance costs.

What is Model Context Protocol (MCP)?

Think of MCP as a universal adapter for AI applications, just like USB-C allows devices to connect to different accessories effortlessly. Instead of manually integrating every data source into an AI agent, MCP standardizes how AI models access external tools, APIs, and knowledge bases.

Why does this matter?

  • Faster AI agent development: No need to build custom integrations from scratch.
  • Automatic updates: AI agents stay in sync as data sources evolve.
  • Enterprise security: Virtual Network integration, Data Loss Prevention, and authentication controls ensure data security.
  • More flexibility: MCP supports pre-built connectors and custom integrations, giving users multiple ways to link their AI tools.

By making AI integration plug-and-play, MCP allows businesses to focus on outcomes rather than backend complexities.

If you’ve been in the AI space, you’ve probably heard of LangChain, another tool that helps LLMs interact with external APIs and data sources. While LangChain and MCP share a similar goal, they serve different use cases.

Which One Should You Use?

LangChain is opensource and great for developers building independent AI-powered applications.

MCP is the best choice if you’re working with Microsoft’s AI ecosystem, including Copilot Studio, Azure AI, and enterprise applications.

Langchain or MCP?

How does MCP work in Copilot Studio?

With this first release, Microsoft has made MCP servers available in Copilot Studio using connector infrastructure. This means:

  • Easily connect to APIs, databases, and enterprise tools.
  • Automatically sync actions and knowledge whenever a connected MCP server and your AI agent update too.
  • Leverage a growing marketplace of MCP-enabled connectors to add pre-built integrations without custom development.
  • Secure your integrations with Microsoft’s built-in compliance and governance controls.

Getting Started:

  1. In Copilot Studio, open your AI agent.
  2. Select “Add an action.”
  3. Search for an MCP server and connect it!

Once connected, your Copilot AI agent will directly access the data, tools, and workflows it needs, through MCP, without requiring manual updates.

For now, MCP is available in preview, and Microsoft is encouraging users to try it out and provide feedback.

Conclusion:

MCP is a game-changer for businesses looking to seamlessly integrate AI with real-world data inside Microsoft’s ecosystem. By making AI integrations simpler, faster, and more secure, Microsoft is setting a new standard for how AI agents connect to external tools and knowledge sources.
